Kernow Pipes & Drums 2017 memories

Sunday 29th October
Band Workshop, Crantock

There was a record turnout for the band workshop on Sunday with 13 pipers and 5 drummers coming along to Crantock Village Hall. The hall was a hub of activity for the day with small groups working on tunes, beatings and doublings before coming together to practice. It was marvellous to have James with us from Exeter and Matt from Plymouth who helped the day run smoothly by giving us the benefit of their knowledge and experience. Individuals worked on band tunes, exercises, personal development tunes and even some piobaireachd. The pipers had an excellent talk from James on the fundamental principles of tuning the pipes which was very well received and gave us the opportunity to learn from an expert. The pipers also went through some ideas with harmonies in preparation for the St Petroc's Society service which all sounded very good although we need to ensure we get the correct balance.

The drum corps were equally busy under Tom's direction with snare and tenor tuition for Eleanor/Chris and Henry respectively. Sue was able to help Henry with his learning before they all joined the pipers for a full practice.

Ali and Adam were attending their first workshop and were each presented a bagpipe set up like a 'goose' (ie without drones) so that they could start on the rudiments of holding the pipes and blowing a steady note. Once their reeds had been sorted they both spent most of the day practicing and ended by playing Scots Wae Hae so well done to both.

Our thanks to Mark for the copious cups of tea and Helen for baking the cakes!

In all, a great weekend of music for the band with much good work achieved.
